Wizards at JDL?

Well, not real wizards. They are really volunteers for the Story Wizards program. Volunteers visit a day care or a preschool once a month and present stories and fingerplays to the children.
Is there a “Story Wizard” in you? No special talents or experience is needed; just bring a love for children and story-telling! Training, books, and materials are provided by the library. We ask that you commit to visit your day care or school once a month. For more information, please contact the Children’s Department, 517-788-4087, ext. 235.

Boat, Dock and Hoist Installation and Removal

Sad to say, it is getting close to the time again to put our toys to bed for the winter.

Neighborlink has been asked many times for referrals for boat, dock and hoist installation and removal providers.  If you know of someone who provides this service
(they do not need to be Neighborlink members), please email Neighborlink with their name or business name and contact information.

After checking with them to be sure they would like to be listed as available, we will share the contact information with all members and also post it on the Link's website.

Additional Weather Warning Sirens Approved for Township

Township officials approved the purchase of three new severe weather sirens to supplement the existing sirens in the township.

Township Treasurer John Calhoun said the sirens will be useful for people participating in outside activities.  If you are out on a golf course or a Lake... you need to get off. The sirens in Columbia Township are designed to be heard outside.

The new sirens will be located at Hayes & Somerset; Hyde & Jefferson; and at the township office in Brooklyn.

Have you wondered why the sirens seem to go off more often than they used to. Brad Flory of the Citizen Patriot has an explanation in a recent editorial. Presented with his usual humor but sounds right... It's the trade off for radar technology. They no longer have to wait for a trained human "spotter" to actually see a tornado. Now radar detects cloud rotation capable of producing tornadoes so we get more warnings. Some tornadoes never develo
p but the siren goes off if conditions are right for one to form.

**IMPORTANT-SAFETY ISSUE**
     *****POP BOTTLE BOMBS ****

A "Works" Bomb is Drain-o and Tin Foil, mixed together inside of a bottle. The chemical eaction between the Drain-o and the Tin Foil makes a volatile build up of gases and subsequently detonates the bottle with a great amount of force. Once the detonation occurs, the chemical substance that is in the bottle is actually boiling liquid. The amount of force that is generated at the time of the explosion is enough to severe fingers and also deliver 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns to the victim. The chemicals can possibly cause blindness and the toxic fumes can be harmful.

1) If you find a soda bottle or any other bottles, examine it carefully before you touch it or get near it. If it shows signs of swelling, or melting in any way, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Call 911 and let us respond to take care of it.

2) If you find a soda bottle that has any liquid in it, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Call 911 and let us respond to check it / dispose of it.

3) Bombs can appear to be slightly swollen, with a dark colored liquid, inside of it. This liquid could have easily been mistaken for left over soda.

I know that calling 911 for a soda bottle may sound silly or like a misuse of your Police protection but trust me, it is not. You do not want one of these devices detonating in your hand or your children's hands or in your pets face. We are here to incur the danger for you so that you are and your loved ones are not harmed. So please check your yard thoroughly before letting your children out to play and be mindful before you just deem that soda bottle as garbage and pick it up.

How to Get Rid of Japanese Beetles

(to see responses to this question click here)

I was reading the Detroit News and a writer in the garden section said that to get rid or reduce the number of Japanese beetles, that it was best to spread the stuff to kill the grubs on th lawn now, and again in the Fall.  We have used on organic lawn treatment with some success but never this early.

He also said to over seed the lawn and keep it as thick as possible, and to water less often but water for longer time periods, as the beetles don't like the thick lawns. Thicker grass will also bring ants and the ants will kill and eat the bettle grubs.

Has anyone tried this and what were your results?  Does this work?  We would rather use an organic method because we have small children and animals in the yard.  I really need some help as my trees  look more like sticks after the beetles finish feeding on them.
Thanks for the help.

Walking and Riding on the Roads

When walking on the road you walk AGAINST traffic. That way if a car doesn't see you, you will see them and get off the road before getting hurt.  - when walking stay on the left.

When riding your bike you ride WITH traffic. That would be riding on the right side of the road.

Stay safe and follow the rules of the road.

Thank you,

Nancy

Bikers - those reflectors on the back of the bike pedal, on your shoes, or on the back of the bike seat  are not visible when you ride.  Please help the rest of us and get reflectors on the bike, and wear a helmet with a mirror so that you can see the traffic on the road behind youWear a reflective vest.

Parents - Please put reflectors on your kids bikes.

Walkers - Please wear a reflective vest.  Regular clothing does not show up as you walk in and out of the shadow of the trees.  That red coat does not make it easier for a driver to see you - it looks dark. Drivers see you against the black & gray of the road making you almost invisible.

Please, keep all of us safe this Summer.

Jackson County Prescription Discount Card

On December 16, Jackson County launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescriptions. These cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage.

  • There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.
  • The NACo discount card program remains a useful option now that Medicare Part D has been implemented. For example, the card can be used when a Medicare Part D plan doesn’t cover a drug.
  • The cardholder pays the negotiated discount price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lower. The average discount is 20 percent.
  • Residents can visit www.caremark.com/naco to print an ID card and use it immediately at any participating pharmacy. Cards will also be available at the Health Department and other county facilities. County residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652

For more information on the discount Prescription Card and other Jackson County Health services such as Mchild & Healthy Kids visit http://www.co.jackson.mi.us/hd/Insurance.asp
