Our cat Sammie came home. He had come up missing on January 7th. He made his way home on his own and he looks good. Thank you to those who saw our ad and kept your eyes on the look out for him.

I wanted to let you know that we found a home for the black and white cat who "found us" before Christmas. One of my son's friends moved to the Detroit area a few years ago... and over Facebook she expressed her interest in adopting him. We waited a couple of weeks for any response from humane society or the vet offices where we posted photos... no one claimed him as their lost pet, so we recently delivered him to his new home.

We will be spending our first Summer on Lake Columbia in 2012. I will be looking for a boat hoist and cover within about 50 miles from the lake and when I find one, I will need it transported to the lake. If any of the Neighborlink members have any recommendations for people they have used to transport hoists from other lakes, it would be appreciated.

Veterans Discounts and Newsletter Sign Up
These are a couple of interesting websites for our Veterans from Julie Watrous, chairperson for the Brooklyn Kiwanis Soldier Project.
One is called VetsFirst. http://www.vetsfirst.org/ . It has guides for separation, public policies, and benefits. Also helpful information for disabled Veterans, Dependents, and Survivors.
This specific link is also for VetsFirst but specifically for discounts for Veterans Day
The second link is for The Military Wallet. Mostly about finance information for Veterans. GI Bill, VA Loans and more including Veterans Discounts. At the top of the page is a link to discounts in honor of Veterans Day. There is also an opportunity to sign up for a newsletter.

For you deer hunters who aren't having much luck, you may be looking in the wrong place!

How to Get Rid of Japanese Beetles
This is an email sent by Peggy Taylor on 9/20/10 to all Neighborlink members as a follow up to her quest to rid her grass of Japanese Beetles:
Much earlier in the year, I emailed asking if anyone had tried to rid their yard of Japanese Beetles by:
1) letting the grass grow to 2 1/2 to 3"
2) over seeding (to get a thicker lawn) and using a more natural method of lawn care as I did not want to use any pesticides.
3) and watering the yard less frequently but for longer time periods when it was watered.
The only answers received were to use an organic pesticide or use the beetle traps that hang in the yard. This was not what I had wanted to do.
As no one had tried this method, we decided to try it anyway and see the lawn would improve. The results were good. The lawn has gotten better - there still a LOT of room for improvement - but there were no beetles in the yard.
We are now taking the rest of the advice from The Yardener, Jeff Ball, who writes in the Detroit News Homestyle Section every Friday. His contact is www.yardener.com or at his blog at http://greatgardensecrets.com
In the next week we will be over-seeding to build up the lawn and fill the rest of the bare spots in the back yard. If all goes well, the lawn should improve and be beatle free next year too.
Peggy
I was reading the Detroit News and a writer in the garden section said that to get rid or reduce the number of Japanese beetles, that it was best to spread the stuff to kill the grubs on th lawn now, and again in the Fall. We have used on organic lawn treatment with some success but never this early.
He also said to over seed the lawn and keep it as thick as possible, and to water less often but water for longer time periods, as the beetles don't like the thick lawns. Thicker grass will also bring ants and the ants will kill and eat the bettle grubs.
Has anyone tried this and what were your results? Does this work? We would rather use an organic method because we have small children and animals in the yard. I really need some help as my trees look more like sticks after the beetles finish feeding on them.
Thanks for the help.

Walking and Riding on the Roads
When walking on the road you walk AGAINST traffic. That way if a car doesn't see you, you will see them and get off the road before getting hurt. - when walking stay on the left.
When riding your bike you ride WITH traffic. That would be riding on the right side of the road.
Stay safe and follow the rules of the road.
Thank you,

Bikers - those reflectors on the back of the bike pedal, on your shoes, or on the back of the bike seat are not visible when you ride. Please help the rest of us and get reflectors on the bike, and wear a helmet with a mirror so that you can see the traffic on the road behind you. Wear a reflective vest.

Jackson County Prescription Discount Card
On
December 16, Jackson County launched a discount card program to help
consumers cope with the high price of prescriptions. These cards may be
used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing
health coverage.
-
There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.
-
The NACo discount card program remains a useful option now that Medicare Part D has been implemented. For example, the card can be used when a Medicare Part D plan doesn’t cover a drug.
- The cardholder pays the negotiated discount price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lower. The average discount is 20 percent.
- Residents can visit www.caremark.com/naco to print an ID card and
use it immediately at any participating pharmacy. Cards will also be
available at the Health Department and other county facilities. County
residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652
For more information on the discount Prescription Card and other Jackson County Health services such as Mchild & Healthy Kids visit http://www.co.jackson.mi.us/hd/Insurance.asp
