University of Michigan’s Museum of Natural History presents the 2012
Family Reading and Science Program Workshop Series: Vital Signs: How
Health Works, a series of three fun, family workshops about science.
This year, we are focusing on showing families what doctors mean when
they talk about health, and how factors in our daily lives may affect
our health.
February
18: Germs, parasites and allergies, Oh my! What makes us sick and what
makes us well? Look at some of the things that make us sick. Learn what
our bodies do to protect themselves.
March
17: Build the $6 million you: Making the most of your health. Learn
what we can do to improve and maintain our health. Examine how our
environment, healthy eating, and exercise influence our health and
well-being.

How do I Turn This Darned Thing On?
Geared for adults with limited experience using computers, this class will cover basic computer components, use and operation of the mouse (right, left, and double click) and an introduction to saving and retrieving documents.

New Library Downloadable Music Service
Freegal
is a downloadable music service. All you need is your Jackson District
Library card number and your PIN. It offers hundreds of thousands of
songs, over 100 genres of music, and more than 50 record labels, all
without having to download software or deal with any digital rights
management (DRM) issues. Access to Freegal is limited to patrons of the
Jackson District Library.
JDL
patrons will be able to download three songs free of cost each week.
You will be able to keep track of your downloads in the upper right
corner of the site. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to
before you download. You can go to "My Wishlist" in the upper right
corner and queue up for future music. The downloads on this site are all
in the MP3 format with no DRM. This service will work with any MP3
player, including iPods, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both
PCs and Macs.
Be
sure to check out the browsing areas, especially Artists A to Z (bottom
of page) and the genre lists (menu bar). Click on see all genres to
view dozens of categories.

Hot Picks
Hot
Picks collection includes copies of selected fiction titles from a
variety of best seller lists that are now available for immediate check
out. You can pick up an item from the Hot Picks collection on a first
come first served basis and check it out immediately for a period of 14
days. To ensure that there is a constant availability of these popular
titles, Hot Picks titles cannot be placed on hold or renewed. There is
no fee to check out a Hot Picks title, but they do circulate for a
shorter period of 14 days to enable more residents to check out these
new items. Additionally, there is a $1 per day fine for items not
returned within the 14 day period.

Pickup
time for holds have changed from 10 days to 7 days. Please contact
your local branch if you are unable to pick up your items within the 7
day period.

Learn a Foreign Language Free - Online
Jackson District Library
The
Jackson District Library now offers an online program you can access
from home. BYKI is designed to help users quickly learn foreign words
and phrases. It is available for free through the library's Web site.
BYKI is a powerful language learning system makes
use of virtual flash cards with audio to help with pronunciation. It
offers more than 60 languages, plus programs to help speakers of
Spanish, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese
learn English.
You
just need your library card and PIN. If you don't have or don't know
your PIN, contact your local JDL branch for assistance.
To log on, visit http://www.myjdl.com/databaselisting
and select BYKI from the list of databases. If you are not already
logged in you will be prompted for your JDL card number and PIN. You
will be prompted to set up a FREE account with BYKI and then just pick
your language (drop down box on right).
If have not used a JDL
database before, you can stop by your local library branch for some
personalized assistance in connecting to BYKI.
